The second largest city in Lower Saxony after the state capital Hanover can look back on a very eventful past. Originating in the 9th century from the settlement of Brunswick, the city on the Oker experienced its first heyday under Henry the Lion in the 12th century. In the middle of the 13th century it became a Hanseatic city and played a leading role in this influential trade alliance for centuries. In modern times, Braunschweig developed into a city of science. Today, nowhere else in the European economic area the density of scientists is as high as there. Numerous technology companies in the aerospace industry and, not least, the VW Group offer highly qualified jobs, and Braunschweig is considered to have the best development opportunities in the future.
Braunschweig also has a lot to offer in terms of the quality of life of its citizens. Whether it is the Christmas market with its 300-year tradition, which has been voted the most beautiful in the whole of Germany several times, a broad sporting landscape with top-class teams in many core sports, or the annual Braunschweig Classix Festival, at which internationally renowned artists perform in a wide-ranging spectrum; Braunschweig has virtually no need to shy away from any comparison with perhaps better-known major German cities. It is not for nothing that a representative survey in 2010 put Braunschweig in an excellent 5th place in Germany in terms of how satisfied citizens are with living in their city. Braunschweig is even in first place in the crime statistics of the leading 50 cities in Germany and thus offers an unsurpassed sense of security for its approximately 250,000 inhabitants.
