The contemplative city in the lower Rhein lowlands achieved international prominence in the 18th Century. The local silk industry enjoyed a superb reputation with emperors and royalty throughout Europe and the clientele of the leading textile manufacturers in the city included famous leaders such as Napoleon Bonaparte and King Friedrich II of Prussia. The textile industry is still an important economic factor in the city today, and it is estimated that around 80% of all ties produced in Germany still come from Krefeld. With the incorporation of the district of Uerdingen, sectors such as the chemical industry and the mechanical engineering and toolmaking segments also play an important role. For example, the ICE train production for the worldwide market at the Siemens Mobility plant in Uerdingen is a German centre of competence in the field of high-speed rolling stock.
Anyone visiting Krefeld will find evidence of its affluent past all over the city. Magnificent buildings such as the Palais von der Leyen, the late-Baroque building Haus Floh and the many churches were extensively restored after the devastating destruction by Second World War bombing and in many areas of the city there are entire streets with splendid façades preserved from the turn of the 20th century. This and much more lend the lower Rhein city with its population of 230,000 its very special character. There are many private and state institutions offering a widely diversified year-round cultural scene. The city’s sports headlines have more recently been dominated by the Ice Hockey team the Krefeld Pinguine, which is a highly successful team playing in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL). In Football, the third division club KFC Uerdingen is trying to return to better days since its DFB cup victory back in 1985.
