The second largest city in northern Germany after Hamburg is also the capital of the eponymous city state and one of the 15 largest cities in Germany. The city’s roots go back way beyond the first recorded mention from the year 782. It is generally accepted that the region around the current city on the River Weser was already settled as far back as the Stone Age. In more modern times, Bremen is best known as an important location for international shipping and has undergone a sustainable structural transformation over the last 50 years. Formerly the home of renowned German shipyards, the city’s image is now characterised by future-orientated technologies such as aerospace and the automotive industry, including the city’s largest private employer Daimler AG.
Bremen’s particular charm is based not least on the fact that the city has been successful in preserving many traditional buildings from the last 600 years and in integrating them into the contemporary cityscape. There are many parts of Bremen where it is possible to wander through narrow medieval alleyways and visit many monument-listed buildings such as the Bremer Roland and the old town hall and at the same time enjoy all the advantages of a modern city. There are numerous museums and extensive landscaped green open spaces and over 50 sports clubs which contribute greatly to the high quality of life.
